Now that season ten of RuPaul’s Drag Race has finished, it’s time for the latest girls to join the seasoned alumni by touring the world. This August, some of the biggest names from the most recent season will be heading to venues across the UK (get your tickets here, henny!) as part of an exciting ’10’s Across the Board’ showcase.
Starring Kameron Michaels, Asia O’Hara, Miz Cracker, Yuhua Hamasaki, and the current reigning Aquaria, the tour promises some show-stopping performances that you’ve come to expect from the RuGirls. Not only that, but crowds in Birmingham will get an extra treat as UK young drag star Athena Heart will be making her stage debut.
As the girls prepare to make their way to the United Kingdom, we caught up with Yuhua Hamasaki to discover what she’s most looking forward to about the tour and her thoughts on whether a UK Drag Race edition would be a toot or a boot.
Hey Yuhua! What can we expect from your 10s Across The Board performance?
Glamour, drag, high energy, bubbly personality… and me robbing everybody’s money at the merch tables! All jokes aside, I love meeting the fans. They are great and so sweet and I love hearing their stories and what brought them to drag shows.
What’s your favourite song to perform?
I go through phases depending on my mood and how I’m feeling. It’s the same thing when someone gets ready in the morning, how they do their hair, makeup, and which clothes to put on – all depends on their mood. But I am usually drawn to old school music and top 40s.
Do you have any pre-show rituals?
I drink a lot of water. I don’t want to be on the stage during a midway performance with a dry mouth and dying for water. That’s not cute. I want to give a full on performance the entire way through.
Are you looking forward to coming to the UK?
Of course… and there’s so many cities in this tour! I cannot wait to see the views, taste the food, and smell the air of the UK.
What’s your favourite thing about visiting the UK?
It’s completely opposite of the U.S. Everything about the UK just seems so proper and upscale. Even their bathrooms!
What are you looking forward to if you’ve never visited before?
Posting photos of me in the UK every 5 seconds on my social media to make people jealous that they’re not there.
Could you see yourself following in the footsteps of Meghan Markle and bagging yourself an English gent?
Yes, I’m a whore. If there’s money, I’m there!
What do you think are the best/worst British accents?
I don’t even know if there’s any bad British accents. Anything they say sounds very high class and elegant, even when they say “I have to poop,” it sounds VERY elegant. Gosh, I love the British accent!
Can you do a good British accent?
Kinda? I don’t know. I’ve been told it’s bad, but I’ve been told it’s also pretty good. So who knows? I’ll let you be the judge.
You’ll be visiting Glasgow on the tour, will you be trying any Scottish delicacies? Perhaps Haggis or a deep-fried Mars bar?
I’ll try everything… even the men!
Is there a difference between UK fans and US fans?
The UK fans carry pounds in their wallets and US fans carry dollars in their wallets…. I think I like the UK fans a bit more!
What do you think of the UK drag scene?
A lot of singing, which is not really the case is the US drag scene. A lot of American drag performers lip sync instead.
Would you like to see a UK version of Drag Race?
Yes, I want to see those bitches go bananas on TV! Actually, I want to see Drag Race in all different parts of the world and see how they adapt to the competition’s format by putting in their own culture’s spin into it.
