Viccky Gutierrez is the second transgender person to be killed in America in 2018.
LAPD West Division and LA Fire Department units responded to reports of a fire in an apartment in the Pico-Union neighbourhood of Los Angeles at around 3:15 AM on Wednesday 10th January.
After tackling the flames for 45 minutes, a badly-burned body was discovered and was later reported as Viccky Gutierrez.
Gutierrez, who immigrated from Honduras, was part of the Los Angeles’ TransLatin@ Coalition. Her friends said she was often be seen at their free daily lunches, which were provided to those in need.
The LA County Coroner’s Office will be conducting an autopsy to identify the body, however friends believe it is Gutierrez as the fire took place in her apartment.
Speaking on Facebook Live, Coalition President Bamby Salcedo said:
Just to learn that she’s no longer with us is really sad, and it’s not that she is gone, it is the way that she was murdered. She was brutally murdered, and we believe that it was intentional, we believe that it was premeditated…She was burned in her apartment. The police, like always try to say to Viccky’s friends not to say anything to anybody because of the investigation… But there’s a couple of things that we want to do. One of those things is to ensure that we seek justice for Viccky.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help raise $10,000, which will be used to pay for her funeral and ship the remains back to her family in Honduras.
