Iceland shares moving palm oil advert that’s banned from airing on television

Christmas adverts on television have become a staple part of the festive season. From the iconic Coca-Cola truck to recent faves like John Lewis and Aldi’s Kev the carrot, there seems like nothing better than a sentimental ad to get us in the holiday spirit.

Unfortunately, the Christmas advert for UK supermarket Iceland won’t be receiving any airtime during re-runs of The Chase and Tipping Point this year as it’s been banned by the advertising body for being deemed too political.

The ad, which was originally made by Greenpeace, features an animated story of a girl who meets an Orangutan in her bedroom after his rainforest home is destroyed by humans for our increased use of palm oil in products such as chocolate and shampoo.

Featuring a voiceover by actress Emma Thompson, the ad has been banned by Clearcast as it is apparently in breach of rules banning political advertising. According to the broadcast code for advertising practice (BCAP), an ad will be prohibited to air if it “directed towards a political end.”

“Clearcast and the broadcasters have to date been unable to clear this Iceland ad because we concerned that it doesn’t comply with the political rules of the BCAP code,” a spokeswoman for Clearcast told the Guardian. “The creative submitted to us is linked to another organisation who have not yet been able to demonstrate compliance in this area.”

Iceland became the first major UK supermarket to ban the use of palm oil in its own-brand foods, due to the devastating impact the ingredient has on the environment and, particularly, on the orangutan. It’s believed that over 50% of products found in UK supermarkets contain palm oil.
