Hot on the heels of the arrival of ‘RINA’, the mini-album released last year, London-based pop futurist Rina Sawayama is back with her second offering of the year in the form of pansexual bop ‘Cherry’.
The track, produced by Hoost and Clarence Clarity, sees Sawayama’s vocals effortlessly soar across punchy drum loops and spiralling, futuristic synths. The bubblegum track is an uplifting delight, showcasing Sawayama’s sweet, soothing vocals and has a sound reminiscent of early-00’s Jennifer Lopez (that’s a compliment BTW).
Speaking about the track to Broadly UK editor, Zing Tsjeng, Rina explained: “I’ve always written songs about girls. I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned a guy in my songs, and that’s why I wanted to talk about it. For me there’s still a lack of representation.
I just think the reason why I wasn’t so comfortable with my sexuality was because there was no one on TV or anywhere that I could point at and go, “Look mum! This person is what I was talking about!”
Following the release of her mini-album, Rina has gone on to work with the likes of Shamir and Charli XCX and will soon be taking to the road this Autumn with her ‘Ordinary Superstar’ tour. Make sure you see her at one of the dates listed below.
