Who could possibly imagine that the reality of a Charli XCX and Troye Sivan could really be anything less than amazing?
The two pop stars have just unveiled their dancefloor-friendly bop ‘1999’ and it’s a complete homage to their youth, and it’s about as retro as it gets. Not only is the cover for the track inspired by the Matrix, but the track references Britney Spears’ debut earworm ‘…Baby One More Time’, Michael Jackson, Jonathan Taylor Thomas (JTT), and even listening to music on CDs.
I just wanna go back, back to 1999, took a ride to my old neighborhood, I just wanna go back, sing, “Hit me baby, one more time”, wanna go back, wanna go.
The track was written by Charli XCX, Troye Sivan, Leland, Oscar Holter & Noonie Bao, with Holter also taking on production duties. It’s believed an earlier solo version of the track was produced by Max Martin before being completely re-done with Holter and Sivan.
Speaking about working on the track with Sivan, Charli XCX told Junkee:
I had this song ‘1999’ and I got it played for him and he liked it which was really cool. It was funny because I always liked the song but I wasn’t sure whether it was totally for me. I was wondering whether I should pitch it [to other artists].
When Troye was like ‘No, I really like it, I would love to do something on it’, I was like ‘Okay, great. I have to keep it, Troye thinks it’s cool, it’s probably cool, ’cause Troye’s really cool, so great’.
There’s talk of a music video accompanying ‘1999’ and we know that Charli XCX has what it takes to pull out those 90s references, so we’re all about that.
