It seems to be that 2018 is the year of the comeback as another pop star is making a return: Avril Lavigne.
It’s been five years since Avril last released an album and, it’s safe to say, she’s had a pretty rocky few years in-between. She was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2014 and divorced her husband of two years, Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger, in 2015. Since then, she’s been working on her recovery and silently been preparing for her big comeback.
The first single to be taken from her sixth (!!) album has just been released and it’s a triumphant return. ‘Head Above Water’ is an inspirational and cinematic ballad that packs a punch – this is Avril’s battle cry and she’s not backing down. “This is me and my fight,” she affirms in a note on her website. “This album tells my story.”
“One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die. My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning. Under my breath, I prayed ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the songwriting of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.”
Her forthcoming, untitled album is due out later this year and will feature collaborators including Stephan Moccio, Chris Baseford, Johan Carlsson, Lauren Christy of The Matrix, Ryan Cabrera, Travis Clark, Bonnie McKee, JR Rotem, Mitch Allan and more.
