Aja is back.
Teasing the upcoming release of their debut album ‘Box Office’ on February 7th, the genderqueer rapper and Drag Race contestant confronts and embraces inner demons in the music video for their new single ‘Jekyll & Hyde’.
The music video, which is directed by Assaad Yacoub, features queer Kansas City rapper Shilow, with a special cameo by fellow RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 9 contestant, Farrah Moan. Aja’s lyricism and flow reach new and impressive heights on the track, proving that Aja is not simply a reality TV star, but an artist all on their own.
In the lyrics, Aja is embracing the fact that as a drag queen and nonbinary person of colour with goals to make it in the music industry, they may face obstacles but knows their path regardless, and recognizes that in order to do so they have to let go of what people want them to be: “These offers I’m turning down / With no shame, I burn the crown / I made my own passing lane / Destiny has been found.”
“The video is about good vs. evil, perception vs. reality and all the experiences that shape how we see the world”
Speaking about the track, Aja says: “When I wrote Jekyll & Hyde, it was like this moment of embracing and confronting my inner demons…reflecting on where I come from, and how I’ve dealt with fame over the past couple years, how it’s changed my perception on creating the art I want to make.
“In the video you see me trying to convince Shilow that he’s the bad guy and I have him locked up after his therapy session with me. But then in the next scene, I appear in a full-body straight-jacket. You realize I’m trying to expel Shilow’s demons but have no intentions of expelling my own. The video is about good vs. evil, perception vs. reality and all the experiences that shape how we see the world.”
‘Jekyll & Hyde’ is the first single from Aja’s forthcoming 15-track debut album ‘Box Office’, which features collaborations with CupcakKe, Rico Nasty, Shea Coulee and Lady Luck.
