The UK’s favourite Christmas films for 2018 show that streaming sites could be disrupting tradition

We all have that one favourite Christmas film that we have to watch each year before we properly start to feel festive. For some people, it may be something that has stood the test of time, such as ‘Miracle on 34th Street’, for others, it may even be a Netflix Original that hasn’t even been available to stream for a whole year.

A new study carried out by, consisting of 1,024 UK adults, has found that 73% of Brits will be getting their festive fix this year from streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu. While that’s no surprise at all, considering the majority of the Christmas classics are there at our fingertips, there’s more that may surprise.

The survey also reveals the UK’s top ten favourite Christmas movies, with traditional classic, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ remaining the nation’s favourite, with 71% of people saying this. Runner-up prize goes to ‘Elf’ with 68% voting the Will Farrell film their top pick. While they are obvious contenders, the third favourite this year is ‘A Christmas Prince’, which was only released last year on Netflix.

The original film from the streaming giant, which jumps on Royal fever thanks to ‘The Crown’, recently had a sequel released in the form of ‘A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding’ (because what’s the point of an original title when you can just describe exactly what happens).

‘The Christmas Chronicles’, which was only recently released on Netflix and features Kurt Russell came in 5th place. It’ll be interesting to see how the film rates in a year’s time, considering its current Metascore is a rather icy 52.

Mark Kelly, marketing manager at, explained the popularity in choosing streaming services over the DVD/TV airing by saying: “The advantages of streaming sites are very clear, with the variety of choice and the convenience is a huge bonus over traditional methods.

“Given these findings, it’s clear that Brits are still very much in love with the Christmas movie, just that they’re adapting their viewing method in line with the times, though I was incredibly surprised to see a couple of Netflix Originals knocking some Christmas Classics off the top spots this year.”
