Kit Harington may play one of the toughest guys on Game of Thrones, but he’s just shown that he’s just as brave off-screen in a recent interview regarding Marvel’s lack of gay representation.
In an interview with Variety whilst at the Toronto Film Festival, Harington said: “there’s a big problem with masculinity and homosexuality that they can’t somehow go hand in hand.” The star then added: “that we can’t have someone in a Marvel movie who’s gay in real life and plays some superhero. I mean, when is that going to happen?”
Marvel has had a bit of a dodgy past when it comes to its on-screen representation. In the comics, Valkyrie is described as being bisexual yet there is no mention in the films of this. The same applies to X-Men’s Iceman and Pyro, who recently had a bit of a thing together.
Harington made his thoughts heard as he appeared at the festival to promote his upcoming film ‘The Death and Life of John F. Donovan’, which co-stars Thandie Newton and is directed by Xavier Dolan. Newton backed up Harington’s comments, by using the sports world as a positive example of how more athletes are feeling able to come out. She added: “It is changing, but we have to get behind those changes and keep pushing it.”
