Sasha Velour’s Smoke & Mirrors to make London debut

Sasha Velour’s ‘Smoke & Mirrors’, the first-ever one-queen theatre show by global drag superstar, Sasha Velour, will make its UK debut at London’s iconic O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 August 2019 (tickets here).

The critically-acclaimed show is an epic high-scale production of drag, live theatre, visual art, magic, and heart-wrenching storytelling.

‘Smoke & Mirrors’ sees Sasha Velour, the gender-fluid drag queen who won season nine of Emmy-winning series RuPaul’s Drag Race, introduce audiences to a whole new side of her artistry, through 13 dazzling and genre-busting lipsync performances, all directed and choreographed by the queen herself.

Viewers will be on the edge of their seat as she explodes into rose petals, vanishes in a poof of smoke, saws herself in half, conjures a rainstorm, and even transforms into a tree in front of their eyes.

The real magic, however, is the way that these illusions and deceptions serve to unmask deeper truths, sparking fresh analysis of gender, fame, family, and the importance of dreaming big and living life over-the-top.

The show toured Australia and New Zealand in January 2019 before a sold out eight-night run in New York City in March, and a packed house in Los Angeles last month, earning rave reviews and special audience guests including Troye Sivan, Broadway icon Anthony Rapp, Allie X, Dorian Electra, as well as RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni Farrah Moan, Peppermint, Naomi Smalls, Nina West and more.

Along with becoming the face of Absolut and Lyft’s Pride campaigns this month, Velour is also set to release a 50-page comic book about the Stonewall Riots in honour of its 50-year anniversary and took over World Pride in NYC with a three-night run of her world-renowned drag theatre revue, Nightgowns, sponsored in part by Lyft.

This spring, Velour made a cameo on the final season of Comedy Central’s Broad City, and guest-starred in The Bold Type on Freeform.

Since being crowned America’s Next Drag Superstar by RuPaul two years ago, Sasha Velour has appeared in Rolling Stone, Vogue and Vogue Italia, collaborated with Opening Ceremony to produce, direct and host their Fall Fashion Show, “The Gift of Showz,” and has spoken and performed at The Smithsonian’s The Long Conversation among the world’s leading cancer surgeons and NASA scientists to share how the power of drag can provide optimism for the future.

Velour is also the creator and director of the premiere artist-driven drag theatre show Nightgowns, which she has produced in theatres in New York, Los Angeles, and London, and the creative director of the art magazine Velour.

‘Smoke and Mirrors’ features the music of Annie Lennox, Whitney Houston, Shirley Bassey, Judy Garland, Celine Dion, Sia, Nina Simone, Le Tigre and more.

Video Production from House of Velour with Gina Garan, with animation by Geo Barnett and Julie Robert. Costumes designed by long-time collaborator Diego Montoya.

Sasha Velour will bring ‘Smoke and Mirrors’ to London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire on Friday 9 August and Saturday 10 August 2019. Tickets £27.50 adv – £115.00 adv VIP. Tickets on sale here.
