In Conversation with Peppermint

We caught up with Peppermint to talk drag, new music, and why her documentary comes with an unofficial seal of approval from Oprah (perhaps).

Peppermint grabbed our attention from the very moment she entered the Drag Race workroom and we’ve never stopped admiring her since. Throughout season nine of the show, Peppermint amazed us with her personality, wit, positivity, and THAT Club Kid outfit (which we’re still gagging over BTW).

We managed to have a quick catch up with Peppermint, who is currently performing all over the world on the Werq The World tour and gearing up for the release of her upcoming documentary ‘Project Peppermint‘.

For anyone who is unaware of your documentary ‘Project Peppermint’, can you describe it to us in five words?

We’ve seen Drag Race alumni recently branching out onto other shows: Alaska was on MTV’s Scared Famous and Courtney was recently on Celebrity Big Brother. Would you be up for the opportunity to go on another reality show and if so, which?

Hell yes, I would love the chance to go on my favourite show ever: The Amazing Race! I would slay that show so hard!

You made history on Drag Race as the first queen on the show to enter as an openly trans woman. Did you feel any pressure in being the first?

Hands down! I was so worried I was gonna disappoint the entire trans community – talk about pressure! Hopefully I did them proud.

In your season, you were declared the “lip sync assassin”. Which queen from Drag Race her-story would you be scared to lip sync against and why?

Well, I don’t know about scared but I wouldn’t wanna go against Mimi Imfurst and get picked up. She Crazy!

What’s one thing about you that many people may not know or be aware of?

I’m a tech wizard. I swear I worked for Geek Squad in another life.

We were treated to the ‘Black Pepper’ EP last year. Are there any plans for more music in 2018? Any collaborations on the horizon?

Yes! I’m releasing an album with Cazwell this spring and I’m working on a 2019 solo album.

Speaking of music, what artists are on heavy rotation for you at the moment?

I’m digging Dua Lipa, Hozier and Koryn Hawthorne.

During Drag Race, you spoke about past experiences where drag queens told you that you’d never make it as a transgender woman. Well, it seems like you’ve definitely made it. What do you have to say to those who doubted you now?

I’d say: “how you like me now bitch!? Now you owe me lunch…or something”.

Do you have any words of wisdom for people who are just starting to identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community and, thanks to certain people in power, may be scared of what’s ahead for them?

I say live your life baby! People will soon see queerness as an advantage. When that day comes we need you to be the best “you” you can be. To everyone else, screw em.

Be sure to keep up with all things Peppermint by visiting her website and make sure you follow her on Twitter to keep in the loop about ‘Project Peppermint’.
