Sam Smith and Calvin Harris Celebrate Ball Culture In New ‘Promises’ Video

Singer and producer collab will bring the house DOWN.

It feels like only a hot minute since Calvin Harris unleashed dance behemoth ‘One Kiss’ with Dua Lipa onto the world. Unsurprisingly, the song was an instant hit and became the song of the summer.

Not content with having one mega-hit of the year under his belt, Calvin is back yet again and this time he’s brought Sam Smith along for the ride too. Following on from the ’90’s style of sound from ‘One Kiss’, ‘Promises’ is an unforgiving house track made for the dancefloor.

The track sees Smith sing: “I make no promises, I can’t do golden rings, but I’ll give you everything (tonight).” It may be a one-off, who knows, but he’s here and ready right now. The song also features backing vocals from the stunning Jessie Reyez.

The video for the track sees Sam Smith visit a gritty downtown warehouse-turned-dancing-paradise, where he’s joined by some of the best Voguers from New York to represent the ball culture of the city. Fans of the documentary ‘Paris is Burning’ and the latest hit TV show ‘Pose’ will know this culture only too well.

Directed by longtime collaborator Emil Nava, the video features appearances from model Winnie Harlow and dancer Kevin Stea, who was one of the dancers to feature in Madonna’s Vogue music video and her coinciding Blond Ambition Tour.

The ‘Promises’ video opens with confessionals from the voguers who took part in the video, explaining just what the dance means to them. One dancer said:

“Growing up in the Bronx, you have to carry this tough skin. Finding vogue – it allowed me to express myself in a way I couldn’t express myself anywhere else.”
