Hey kitty girl.
Janelle Monáe is one of the most exciting artists around at the moment. When she’s not challenging stereotypes, perceptions, and ideals through her music, she’s doing it through her films or music videos.
Following her bisexual anthem ‘Make Me Feel’, the singer has just released the music video for her latest single ‘PYNK’ continues to spread a message. This time it’s all about the vagina and being a woman.
The video for the track, which will be taken from her upcoming album ‘Dirty Computer’ and also features Canadian art pop musician Grimes, sees Monáe explore female liberation and the beauty of being a woman.
The scene-stealer of the video comes in the form of Monáe’s vagina pants, which were created by designer Duran Lantink. Given only a week to create them, Lantink told Dazed that “I really loved the idea of a giant vagina as legs. Janelle loved it, so we tweaked it into something we both loved.”
Many viewers were quick to pick up on the fact that each of the dresses were unique in shape and size, whilst some did not wear the dresses – an acknowledgement that not all women have vaginas.
Directed by Emma Westenberg, the video continues the story-line of ‘Make Me Feel’ and sees ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ star Tessa Thompson make another appearance – emerging through Monáe’s unique choice of legwear.
Describing the song and video through her YouTube description, Monae declares that “PYNK is a brash celebration of creation, self-love, sexuality, and pussy power!” as well as a a track “that unites us all” as “the colour found in the deepest and darkest nooks and crannies of humans everywhere.”
Monáe releases her new album ‘Dirty Computer’ on April 27th.
