Iconic Image From Manchester’s Section 28 Protests To Be Recreated 30 Years On

New recreation of iconic image taken during Manchester’s Section 28 protests in 1988 will be shortly unveiled.

To coincide with the 30th anniversary of Section 28, a new exhibition will recreate one of the most iconic scenes from the protests that happened following the introduction of the Local Government Act 1988.

The February 20th, 1988 protests in Manchester saw more than 20,000 people take to the streets to march for the fight for equality. Amongst them, Ian McKellen and actress Sue Johnson also took part.

Re:Con, Contact’s young programmers and producers, are set to unveil a recreation of one of the most iconic photographs from the protests. The image, which was shot in February by renowned photographer Manuel Vason, saw 65 participants take 30 steps down Canal Street, to represent the 30 years since the Act. amongst the participants were activists present at the original protest.

Re:Con’s Ali Wilson said:

Our February recreation of the march with 65 participants on its 30th anniversary was a momentous day, aided by the artistic leadership of Manuel Vason. Manchester has a large community of activists, many of whom were present at the protest in 1988 and they have been generous in sharing their experiences and knowledge about this campaign. Hearing first-hand stories of the 25,000+ people marching through the city centre has brought this history to life for us whilst we have designed and delivered this project over the past eight months.

To unveil the image, Re:Con will be putting on an evening of entertainment featuring pop-up poetry, speeches and a DJ set from Kiss Me Again. The event will take place at Manchester’s Radisson Blu Hotel. Whilst tickets are free, booking is required – which you can do so on Contact’s website.

The image will be exhibited in conjunction with an immersive installation by artist Bethany Hermitt asking “What are the next thirty steps?”
