Mariah Carey Glitter 2001

Why is Mariah Carey’s ‘Glitter’ back in the charts?

Well, why not? Perhaps seen as an oversight by many, Mariah Carey’s ‘Glitter’ era was a tough time for the singer. The movie of the same name received a harsh response, seeing the artist struggle to keep up with the high expectations of her record label at the time.

Flash-forward to 17 (!!) years later, and the era is finally having its time to sparkle thanks to a fan campaign. Nowadays, the ‘Glitter’ film and its soundtrack have a cult-like status and, in hindsight, many people now realise the film isn’t actually that bad (as a popcorn flick, it’s good actually).

But why, with new music literally just around the corner, has the album entered the iTunes top ten? Well, it’s all part of a #JusticeForGlitter campaign set up by Mariah’s fans. The album never got its chance to shine during its initial release, so it only seems fair that it’s now getting its moment.

The success of the campaign has been so high that the album is currently even at the top of the iTunes charts, beating out Lady Gaga’s ‘A Star is Born’ soundtrack and Imagine Dragon’s latest album.

Fans have been tweeting their support for the album and sharing their purchase of the album on iTunes. The album is, surprisingly, nowhere to be seen on streaming platforms. In fact, even Mariah has acknowledged herself the campaign.

Not only that but Nathan Wyburn, who recreated Trixie Mattel in pizza form earlier this year, shared his creation of the iconic diva designed entirely in glitter. A-ma-zing. The star saw his design and its safe to say that Wyburn’s year has officially been made.

Here are some other reactions on Twitter to the #JusticeForGlitter campaign so far.
