Five Facts About Shangela

Hallelou! Your girl Shangela is BACK.

The Nancy Drew of Drag Race is back! Shangela is taking to the Drag Race stage once again to compete in the upcoming season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars. Can you handle it?

When she wasn’t appearing out of boxes, telling queens she doesn’t have a sugar daddy, or  impersonating Tina Turner, Shangela was a high-energy contestant who turned from drag novice to drag superstar.

Here’s five facts about the professional werking girl.

A True Drag and Acting Star

Shangela isn’t just mighty talented on the drag front, she’s also an actor. Under Shangela’s real name, D.J. Pierce, you’ll have seen D.J. on a whole host of shows including 2 Broke Girls, The X-Files, Bones, and Community.

Not only that, but she also made an appearance on Glee during a very unusual mash-up of the Scissor Sister’s Let’s Have a Kiki and Turkey Lurkey Time from the Burt Bacharach musical Promises, Promises. The number featured Sarah Jessica Parker and is worth a watch:

She’s Done Many Drag Race Firsts

Shangela was, of course, the first contestant on Drag Race to have competed in two separate seasons. She was the only one with this achievement, until season nine when Cynthia Lee Fontaine returned. Eureka O’Hara will also return for season ten.

Not only that, but her appearance on the upcoming season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars will make her the first (and only!) contestant to have competed in three different seasons. Hallelou, indeed.

Drag Race Set Her Up for Pageantry Success

It’s well known that during her initial appearance on Drag Race, she hadn’t been in drag for a long time and wasn’t as experienced as her fellow contestants.

Since appearing on Drag Race, she’s certainly made up for it though. After the show, Shangela competed in the Miss California Entertainer of the Year pageant, eventually winning the crown and the title of Miss California Entertainer of the Year.

She Has Her Own Talent Agency

Not content with being an acting and drag superstar, Shangela also runs her own talent agency business.

Say What Entertainment is a talent and event management agency, which currently represents some of the finest Drag Race queens including the legendary Alyssa Edwards and Gia Gunn.

Speaking to Forbes about the decision to set up her own agency, Shangela says:

I’ve gone through a number of managers right after RuPaul’s Drag Race and a lot of us didn’t know how to approach our new found fame. If you’re not familiar with the business, you can get taken advantage of and I felt that I ran into that a little bit and that’s what motivated me to start the company.

She is an Energetic Performer

When you go to a Shangela show, you get one hell of a performance. It’s high energy, fast-paced, and driven. Shangela also choreographs many of her own routines too.

If you want to watch an ICONIC performance from Shangela then check out this performance from the finale of season seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Joined by Alyssa Edwards and Laganja Estranga, fellow members of the Haus of Edwards, it’s an exhaustingly fun routine:

Catch Shangela and the rest of the All Stars queens on Thursday 25th January at 8PM on VH1 in the US and on Saturday 27th January at 10PM on Comedy Central in the UK.
